Fisherman’s Guide
Käringsund offers fishing spots all year round. Among the species found here are typical predators like pike, perch, and sea trout. The area is especially good for trout fishing, whether from boat or land.
Fishing Spots:
Käringsund Canal – South
The southern part of the Käringsund Canal offers diverse fishing opportunities year-round. It is well sheltered and suitable even in windy conditions.
Sea trout overwinters in sheltered bays and can be fished from December through late April. The best spot is along the shore from Käringsund Resort to the old boathouses. Also worth trying is the small island in the middle of Käringsund. The canal area is popular for trout, especially near the shallow channel, particularly in overcast weather.
Pike can be found randomly throughout the area all year.
The best perch fishing I’ve experienced has been in July, especially in the inner strait between the two small islets.
Käringsund Canal – North
The bay in the northern part of the canal is among the best places in Eckerö for sea trout. They gather here when the water is cold – during winter and spring. I've had the most success in the western part of the bay by the sloping shoreline near the canal mouth. Pike are also found in the same spots. In spring, trout often return here, so if you get a bite, it’s worth staying or coming back later. In my experience, once you find the right spot, there’s often a lot of fish – rarely just one.
Nabbfjärden
Heading north from the canal, you reach Nabbfjärden with two clear hotspots. The first is the bay between Västanholmen and Östaholmen where pike often hide in the reeds – I’ve even caught trout there. The second is the shallows in the northwest, north of Flythällarna. Here, in reeds and rocks, you can catch dozens of pike – especially in winter and spring.
Långön
One of the top sea trout spots is around the northern tip of Långön. It’s especially good in late autumn – October and November – when the first schools arrive. The area is small, but several schools of fish gather here.
Brännskärsviken
West of Käringsund’s inner bay lies Brännskärsviken, where sea trout gather in spring after leaving inner bays. April is best, but trout can be caught through May and sometimes even into June. Schools return again in late autumn (Oct–Nov).
Västerö South Tip – Rödklobb/Luraskatan
Between two peninsulas lies a long sandy beach – a good spot for sea trout in late autumn, winter, and spring. The beach is very shallow, and the fish often stay close to shore.
Sandviken
South of Berghamn lies the large bay Sandviken. It sometimes holds trout schools as its sandy bottom attracts baitfish. Best in late autumn but can be good in winter and spring too. The hotspots are on either side of the island in the center of the bay.
Holmviken
This narrow bay lies northeast of Nabbfjärden, on the east side of Holmskatan. It’s the only true pike spot in the area. The shallow, warm water attracts pike in spring, but autumn and winter are also good. Most fish have been caught on the western shoreline. Likely good in early autumn as well – fish the whole west shoreline down to the outer tip of Holmskatan.
Fishing from Shore
The best places on Åland for fishing sea trout from land are in southern Eckerö between Styrsingsudden and Långnabba. You can drive almost to the water. The beaches are gently sloping, making wading easy.
Lures
For sea trout, I prefer Vicke and JK spoons, as well as Kuusamo's Tundra. Colors vary throughout the day and depending on weather. For pike, my favorites are Storm suspending lures and jerkbaits.
These fishing spots have been experienced by the author over many years or gathered from local fishing guides.
Good luck fishing!
